The hardware people will tell you it's software. Anything in the chain from the controller on outwards can cause this error, and Windows really can't tell where the problem happened. An oddball screensaver can also affect turn on, wake up from suspend Shut that down also.
I haven't even run chkdsk since the last crash (takes forever I'll do it later) and it is both running and sounding fine. What I also found interesting, is that I get the same error for my CDROM. The software people tell you its a hardware problem. After a bit of fooling around I uninstalled the Intel Storage Manager and boom, everything is fine again, chkdsk is happy and no more error 51 in the event log.
