I used David's instructions from 9/26/2007. After trying using a USB (and failing) I moved to a CD. Because you have to have a fully operational system first to go on the internet. Please type your message and try again.

you need to insert your windows xp disk into another computer and copy the i386 folder to another location.... It would have been better to have first created a new folder on the D: Drive and copied the CD into that (eg. Copy ALL essential files and personal settings to another disk eg. I read a few sites and think I tried almost everything -- changed Bios settings, burned the i386 folder to a separate disk, went through the entire alphabet trying different paths,

I had to temporarily hook-up an old IDE DVD drive to complete the install and all was good. If it can do this, then it should show the C:\> Prompt.
I'm sure that the boot order has everything to do to this, but I didn't have to change anything there. Though I think the fix involves the registry edit described here and elsewhere as the report it gave me after the fix said it had fixed corrupted class filter drivers.
